A boy washes his face at one of the many water kiosks in Borama, the capital and the largest city of the Awdal region of Somaliland, northerwestern Somalia.
The town has gone through a major transformation ever since its water system came under the management of a public-private partnership (PPP). Under the PPP, all stakeholders, including the local authorities, communities and private water companies are brought together to give collective inputs in the usage and management of the town's water resources. The result has been startling. In 2003, just a little over 100 households were connected to the waterline. Now the number has reached to over 10,000, or 90% of the households. The PPP model has received support from UNICEF and the European Commission - Development & Cooperation - EuropeAid, under a joint project to improve the situation of water in urban areas
